22 Jan 2022 (edited 23 Jan 2022) Winter

I walked from Arnold to Hucknall on a dry, cold winters day. This is a good route with metal roads and well-tended gravel paths – one part of the route was a walk through fields, this was short and only muddy around the exit gate. While there were some gates there were no stiles to navigate.

The walk began through a couple of streets out of Arnold but you were quickly walking next to fields and into Bestwood Country Park (BCP). I can’t believe that this park has grown up in forty years; in the 70’s this was a closed coal mine and slag heap. Through untold hard work by councils and volunteers the Park has been restored to its former glory.

I briefly walked out of this part of BCP and walked along the edge of Bestwood village before rejoining the Park into Mill Lakes. This was a little wilder than the main Park with wood bridges crossing streams and stone bridges crossing paths.

A short walk out of Mill Lakes and past in industrial estate took me onto the train bridge over the train and tram stops and back to Nottingham.

The route leaves Hucknall through the industrial estate before entering Mill Lakes country park. After crossing Moor Road it climbs up The Spinney and via the Robin Hood Way reaches Park Road leading to Bestwood Country Park. There are three kissing gates with muddy and uneven ground in this section. From here to Arnold is on hard surfaces.

The route through BCP is on the main drive leading to Bestwood Lodge and then down its access road. From here to the middle of Arnold is on minor roads through housing.

Very nice walk through housing estates and woods, although the last part is at the edge of a dusty industrial estate. Public toilets just before entering the woods. After exiting the woods, the footpath to the right is through a gap in the hedge which is only visible when you come close.

A very pleasant walk, most of it through the Bestwood country park. It's all paved or solid track apart from a small section across a meadow in the middle just outside Bestwood village and there is a small step to get out at the Arnold end of this meadow.
