Description
This route avoids the loop south out of Hilton. It uses roadside pavements which often have an additional grass buffer between you and the traffic. It is 10% shorter and includes shops half way in Mickleover where there are also frequent buses to Derby. There are no stiles, no cattle and the paths are all either bonded or fine stone surfaces

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

02 May 2024A direct, safe, relaxing, well plotted route. I started it from Hilton. This takes a more obvious direct route out of Hilton. The price of this is a burst of pavement pounding near the busy A50, but the pavements are wide and in no time you're joining the old railway at Etwall. This takes up the majority of the walk and is a quiet, friendly, surfaced way to walk through the South Derbyshire countryside. You leave this on arrival in Mickleover, a pleasant suburb of Derby. The route through to New Zealand, a inner city area of Derby is via more off-road, well defined paths. New Zealand itself offers shops and a couple of places to eat but you're not far from the city centre. You join the Ashbourne Road aka the historic "Beer Mile" with a lot less than a mile of it to go. The route takes you past bus stops, eateries and bars to the meeting point at the Bus Station. The route is fully accessible. There are no steps or stiles. There is a pub and shops in Mickleover and a pub, Seven Wells, north east of Etwall en route. There are buses at either end.

27 May 2022I walked Hilton to Derby this is the most direct route which involves some mostly wide roadside pavement for 1.5km. A possible to loop into Etwall using Hilder-2 but otherwise railway path then divert into Mickleover for shops and buses. Surface good fine stone or bonded tarmac. No stiles so buggy friendly.
Heading out of Hilton immediately northwards, some care is needed at road crossings which are not light controlled. The old road approaching Etwall has the least friendly pavement. No direct link to the Sustrans route at the bridge so a loop into the estate built on the station site. It's then a simple tramp to the edge of Mickleover which can be explored or ignored, see Hilder-2 for the latter. Not a great selection of shops but it does include chips and coffee in different establishments. Buses every ten minutes to Derby if needed.
Back on the trail through the Meadows Nature Reserve and a surprisingly pleasant green corridor to reach the edge of the city then quiet roads of suburbia to reach first the business centre along Friar Gate then the shops around what may still be called the Eagle Centre by older residents.
