Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

ShortLegsLongWalk

30 May 2023 Spring

This was part of one of the first big walks I ever undertook with my friend. It is very easy to follow and doable in any kind of footwear. It is straightforward (because you are just following the coastline) and scenic (for the same reason).

Lovely route and very clear from start to finish. Along coastal path, concreted so accessible to mobility vehicles, cyclists and walkers. New permanent route round cliffs at Herne Bay. Great views of sea, with cafes and toilets en route very popular.

I walked this on a warm autumn day, with light clouds (I got sunburned!), from Herne Bay to Margate. I am giving this route a 4½, instead of a 5, not because it's not really nice, but because it's repetitive. It follows the Oyster Bay Trail, and Saxon Shore trails for most part, and you will always have the sea on your left or on your right.

From Herne Bay station I walked through the park and some small streets towards the sea, which the route then follows all the way into Margate. You pass by beach houses and huts, sailing boats, and many birds. The route is nearly fully on concrete, with about 2 km on grass. It is almost fully cyclable as shown, but there are alternatives where cycling isn't OK. There is one section near Westgate-on-Sea where you walk along a road. It's not too busy though, and the section isn't very long. There are some steps involved. Some sections can be dangerous in a storm (see photo). There are at least toilets at Minnis Bay (behind the Minnis Bar & Restaurant).

The Reculver towers are quite prominent for a long way, and there is nearly always a village in the distance.

I really enjoyed this route, and would certainly use this!.
