11 Sep 2022We walked this route starting in Stratford, where we joined the canal towpath, and simply stayed on it until just north of Wooten Wawen. This wasn’t strictly per either of the Slow Ways routes Henstr 1 or 2, but the towpath was so enjoyable and easy to walk that we really couldn’t see the point of diverting off it.
We lunched at The View, a cafe above Hill Farm Marina from where - as the name suggests - we were able to enjoy the surrounding Warwickshire countryside.
For the last part of the walk into Henley we did follow Henstr 1, which was through woods and fields (though on one occasion around the perimeter, where a farmer had ploughed up the footpath across the middle). The wooded part was really quite overgrown, to the point where my 4’ 11” wife had to remove her rucksack to get through certain sections. At 6’ 0” I had no choice but to do likewise!
I’d certainly recommend walking this route.

21 Sep 2021Route walked in August 2021.
The first four miles offer easy walking along roads, arable fields, parts of which are prone to flooding after heavy rain, and then along canal towpaths.
The route drops down from the towpath to road level after the Edstone aqueduct and the first 50 metres of a path from the side of Apple Barn was hidden, very overgrown, with dangerous holes due to rainwater run off necessitating a return detour along the canal to pick up the route where it crosses the waterway. Some of the field paths leading to Wilmcote were not obvious and need careful use of the map.
Main issue on between Wilmcote and Stratford where there is no crossing over the A46. This is a very busy road. The footpath on the southern side is also closed while a new housing estate is built. No alternative route. Strongly advise re-joining canal towpath about 1 mile south of Wilmcote via the second footbridge and following it into Stratford-upon-Avon.

26 Jul 2021I'm not sure why this road diverts down the Bishopton Road rather than carrying straight underneath it on the canal towpath, but at the moment the foot path this diversion uses is its self diverted as a new housing estate is being built. I'd suggest just sticking to the canal towpath anyway - at least that way you pass under the A46 safely rather than having to take your life in your hands trying to run across it.
