Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

26 Jun 2021I walked this route from Watford to Hemel. For the most part, this is a lovely walk, although there is one major problem; it crosses a fast and busy road where there is no crossing available. There is no pavement on the other side of the road either, meaning that I had to go a slightly different route to get to the canal, and that somebody going the other direction may not have been able to cross (particularly at busy times). Other route options include:
-Carrying on down Hempstead Road (the quiet one) until the end, and then crossing the busy road and continuing down the (wide and reasonably safe) footpath until reaching the canal - this is the route I ended up taking
-Taking the first path off Hempstead Road and walking down Grove Mill Lane until reaching the canal - however be aware that there is no pavement
-Avoiding Watford Junction Station altogether, and continuing down the High Street, down through Cassiobury Park and turning right down the canal (this is probably the safest solution but is quite a large detour from the route as shown)
Apart from the difficulty crossing Hempstead Road (the busy one), this is generally a very easy and pleasant route to walk, particularly after reaching the canal. Plenty of opportunity to pause and watch the wildlife too!.
