Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Hiking Historian
26 Feb 2024An unremarkable route, but it suits its purpose. It's foot-only, unfortunately, due to a stepped footbridge and terrain.
From the centre of Haydock, we take well-paved roads to the East Lancs Road, a busy dual carriageway which we cross using a footbridge. Across it, a short residential road, then a gradually uphill walk through an industrial estate. Once past the warehouses and factories, we turn onto a footpath.
The footpath is quite long, but mostly straight, but it can be muddy, with standing water in places, and overgrown in parts. It mostly follows an old wall, which we pass through at point. At the end, we pass through woods to a footbridge over the M6.
Once over the bridge, it's along the wall of the school to the main road, which we follow into the centre of Ashton-in-Makerfield, and, past the crossroads, to the end of the route.
Not the most exciting of routes, but it's easier and friendlier than the two original versions.
