Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

[This review is largely the same as for Harwel Two]

Both Harwel One and Two are good routes through some nice scenery - both have sections that will post accessibility issues for wheelchairs certainly, and probably buggies; bikes will need to take a detour on some footpath-only sections.

I'm not convinced this is worse than Harwel Two, just different. One has a beautiful river walk past some lovely fields and old houses (but more chance of flooding), Two has an old railway path which is less interesting but more reliable (but better for cyclists). Note that the roads at Ayot Green can flood (Ayot Little Green Lane in particular near where it meets Ayot Green, but I've seen Ayot Green flooded too) so either bring wellies or look for a diversion. It only happens when it has been incredible heavy rain and the council haven't cleared the drains (the latter being rather common!).

Lots of food and drink options at both Harpenden and Welwyn ends, Wheathampstead has some options (a Tesco express, a couple of cafes, pubs). If you time it right there is a farm cafe at Croft Farm on Cherry Tree Lane - check online though as their opening hours have a logic I've never bothered to understand!

Toilets in Harpenden (near Pizza Express, or eg. Sainsburys), Wheathampstead (by car park behind The Bull on East Lane) and Welwyn (Sainsburys again! There are probably some in the Howard Center too).

This route between Wheathampsted and Ayot Green is often muddy (due to proximity to the river) and willfully ignores the much more accessible and useable Ayot Greenway a few hundred metres to the north which covers almost the same route between these two.
