Description
This route starts along high chalk downland with views across Kent and even to tall towers in London on a clear day. There is some road walking on "leafy" residential roads and quiet country lanes. Later it's along footpaths through narrow woodlands and small fields.
This is an improvement on Harsol 2, mainly as it avoids walking beside traffic on Nurstead Lane and Park Hill. It takes a slightly simpler way through New Barn and then along very quiet lanes to Nash St, with a lovely view at Windmil Hill Rd and passing some beautiful old houses at the top of Nash St. It was dry when tested.
but may have a short flooded road section, like Park Hill, although there is no roadside warning sign here.
The second difference is smaller. A footpath runs parallel to the bridleway after Nurstead Court. It should have less muddy hoof-churn in wet weather and will have a brilliant display of bluebells. There are a few informal paths linking back to the Harsol 2 route which are a bit shorter but this route uses the public footpath.
Expect steep bits in the first half, stiles, kissing gates, tree roots which form steps and potentially muddy paths. No rest places but train stations, shops and pub(s) at either end

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

21 Feb 2023Loved this route. I haven't walked the road section through New Barn but it appears very straightforward on Google Maps.
