Description

This route goes through Gravesend along quiet streets, walking just inside a couple of parks and along a small green lane beside a school playing field. At the edge of Gravesend (after Morrisons) the route is almost fully off-road from there until Sole Street, it's around 70% off road overall. The only interruption is the rumble of traffic from the 8-lane A2 or possibly an HS1 train rushing past. I found this faded very quickly. This route also deliberately overlaps fully with GraHar 3 up to Morrisons, and with HarSol 1 from Nursted Court to Sole Street, this should save effort for anyone reviewing both routes.

The main reason to replace GraSol 1 was to take a much quieter way through Gravesend. It also fixes some small inaccuracies. The other benefit for this route is Morrisons supermarket, also cafe, for snacks, coffee and toilets. Apart from a small petrol station a few minutes further on this is the only "mid-route" stopping place. Gravesend has all the facilities you'd expect from a decent sized town. Sole Street is small for a village but does have a nice pub, a very tiny shop and the train station.

Between the petrol station and Sole Street the route now almost follows the Weald Way long distance route and the good waymarking should make the journey easier. It doesn't for a little while just west of Copthall Road, this was originally to avoid a muddy bridleway section, but if that isn't a problem you could just follow the WW arrows and fingerposts

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Please test this GraSol 2 version instead of GraSol 1. It avoids a busy A-road in Gravesend, it's more accurate and easier to follow, goes past Morrisons (with cafe) for last minute snacks or coffee, and overlaps with HarGra 3 and HarSol 3 at either end, so they can be all reviewed together with ease.

The highlights, a way through Gravesend using small parks and quiet roads. The land around the Cyclopark, essentially a linear country park separating Gravesend from the 8-lane A2. A haystack the size of an manor house. Pretty cottages at Nash Street. Small fields scattered through small woodlands with bluebell shoots promising a fine display. A very little shop and a nice pint of beer in Sole Street to finish.

Towards Sole Street this route does leave the Wealdway briefly, which was to avoid a rather muddy bridleway section and adds little distance. But if the weather was dry I'd likely stay on the WW for simplicity.

I mostly walked in February 2023, from Gravesend to Sole St but then other parts during other walks, other seasons, while reviewing and testing other local Slow Ways routes.
