01 Sep 2021Leaving Grange station the route follows the pavement of the main road, however the first quarter of a mile can be walked along the prom, as there is a footbridge over the railway to meet the pavement. Soon the route turns onto the first of many quiet roads with no pavement. At Meathop the route uses a fields footpath to cut the corner. This is difficult to follow, and probably takes longer than staying on the road, but it is a change from tarmac. The roads then cross between mosses or marshes, which are probably good for birdwatching - ospreys nest nearby. I heard them but didn’t see them. There is a good view across the marshes to Arnside. It looks as if it would be easy to walk to, but you’d have go via Levens anyway!
The sound of the A590 becomes apparent and remains so, for most of the rest of the route unfortunately, but it doesn’t really spoil the views. After the road subway beneath the A590, the shop and pub at Witherslack provide a good break. Then there is another quiet road, before the route passes through farms but is, initially, a little tricky to find. The path then passes through the woods on the flanks of the magnificent Whitbarrow Scar. It is an absolute delight. It is higher than the rest of the flood plain, and there are beautiful views across the Kent Estuary as it enters Morecambe Bay. A bit more quiet road, a short cycle track, and a riverbank, lead onto the road into Levens.
This is a lovely quiet route (ignoring the drone of the A590) across managed marshland with wonderful views surrounding the whole area.
