Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

I walked in the direction of Wells and this is a very good route. An option for leaving Glastonbury is just to follow the Wells Road - the marked Slow Way takes you up a steep hill and straight back down the other side on a (minor) road which has no pavement for part of it. The middle part seems very long since it is so straight and flat, but it is easy walking to cover the miles. Coming round the hill for the first view of Wells and its cathedral in the valley below, was a real treat. There are also fabulous views of the Palace as you come into Wells across the fields.

I enjoyed walking this route, heading from Wells to Glastonbury. It's mostly along quiet paths and roads, with lovely scenery, including the iconic Glastonbury Tor. I found the route easy to follow. The only bit of minor confusion for me was when a footpath crossed a wheat field and I initially had trouble seeing where I should wade through the well established grain!.

Whichever way you walk it, and you should, as you close in you get one of two great iconic English views. We went from Wells to Glasto, from the architecturally exquisite to the spiritually - err - weird. That way you see the Tor for most of the way as you trek along the levels. In the other direction you'll see Wells Cathedral almost floating above the Levels. Mostly on roads, straight, quiet and with small nudges at the Wells end, you could do this all on wheels. Lovely views and fun places at both terminals.

Beautiful, easy to navigate Slow Way. We went from Wells to Glastonbury enjoying lovely views across the Somerset Levels and across to Glastonbury Tor for most of the way.

Not quite five stars from me because most of it is on road and about half a mile of it is on a cycle path by a main road, but the roads are very quiet and it is a good route I'd definitely use again.

Fuller review to come.
