Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

21 May 2023 Spring

A good route through some nice, mostly quiet countryside. Had hoped it would be fully accessible, but there is a bit of rough ground and a gate, so wheelchair users will not be able to use it, but others will.

Starting at Formby station, the route is on pavements through urban areas for a while; there are good road crossings and shops along the way. Once we're over the Formby bypass and the superstores on the junction, we're into the countryside.

The road to Altcar, whilst paved, can be quite busy, but, once we hit the village, we're onto an unpaved road, but it's a farm track leading out onto fields, so need to worry about traffic. Ot becomes quite worn and buckled along the way, so may be an obstacle with those using buggies and such. At its end, it becomes an earth and stone farm track which runs alongside ditches.

At its end, a locked gate, but easily bypassed (but not by wheelchairs), which leads to the old railway, now a footpath on a mixture of tarmac and metalled stone, part of the Cheshire Lines Path.

This is a lovely rural walk, and used by walkers and cyclists alike. Whilst straight, it's hardly uninteresting; we're surrounded by rich nature.

At time of writing, the path between Carr Lane and Green Lane is being improved, and technically closed, but it was still in use by many users. Normally I'd leave the path at Green Lane, but it is unpaved, hence the push to Sefton Lane.

At Sefton Lane, we join the road, and follow the route along pavements to the shops at Maghull Square.

A good mostly rural route connecting two towns with good transport connections and shopping and food outlets.
