Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

06 Aug 2024A good route between Formby and Downholland, through the countryside using an old railway and footpaths. It is mostly accessible, but the sections across fields result in this being foot-only. Passing along the drive and past the farm, we join the road. Unpaved, it is a quiet rural road, although not totally free from traffic.
From Formby station, we have a fair few paved roads to walk. After a few junctions, we come to a bus stop on Watchyard Lane and joing a tarmac footpath, which runs between fences until it meets the bypass. Using its crossings (no lights, so timing is essential on such a busy road), the footpath beyond uses a few stiles as we pass through a succession of paddocks.
As the road starts to rise to cross the bridge, we leave it and join a tarnac track which brings us onto the old railway. The footpath is metalled earth, and can be muddy in places, but generally a good walk, and is being gradually being by replaced tarmac. A long and straight path, passing under a few bridges along the way, once we're past the sewage works, we turn left onto a short dirt track that brings us to an unpaved rural road.
Shortly after, we're off down a farm track, muddy in places, and arrive on the unpaved Church Lane. Paved near the church, we turn onto the main road, again paved, but it switches sides a couple of times, until we arrive at the Scarisbrick Arms, and the end of the route.
A good mostly rural route on quiet roads and footpaths.
