23 Apr 2023 Spring

I walked this from Ewell to Esher on a cloudy Saturday morning, with little rain in the previous week.

From Ewell the route starts along some busy roads, with not always great pavements, before following a shared metalled path (photo #1), which is nice and wide. Walking along Chantilly Way is OK (photo #2), as there is a good pavement. After crossing Horton Lane, the route goes past Hobbledown (photo #3) and through Horton Country Park was lovely (photo #4). West of Chessington South station, a diversion is needed — I will propose an updated route. I opted to go down Banwell Lane — although there is no pavement (photo #5), and it is busy, cars were driving very slowly as there are so many pot holes. There is then a muddy footpath north, and then east again (photo #6), to re-join the route at the Esher Bypass, with a tunnel. The path there is a little muddy, but not too much (photo #7), before end up at Lower Wood Road where the route then follows residential streets of Claygate. From here the route goes north towards Telegraph Hill, a fairly steep walk, but lovely views at the top (photo #8), and easy to walk. Manor Road South (photo #9) is easy going, and after a short section along a road of Oaken Lane (photo #10), there is a foot path on the west to follow (photo #11). Unlike the other two comments, there is actually an alternative along Littleworth Road (photo #12), that I will also be putting in my updated route. Going through Littlewood Lane and Sundown Road (photo #13) is easy, with little traffic as it's all blocked off. The sun came out here as well. After that, it was a short section along the High Street to end up at the finish (photo #14).

Marking this as a two star, in favour of my proposed route Eshewe two, which is a four.

John Myerson’s review has already mentioned the error in the route at the new housing estate. Head up Merritt Gardens off the A243 and turn off down the path and you’ll be back on route.
Few roads with no paths but nothing too dangerous.

Some difficulties in the first section: Littleworth Road has no pavement and is derestricted (275 metres) - no alternative. Footpath after this (Oaken Lane) has steps up to railway bridge. There are steps down to Green Lane. There's an error with the route between the A3 underpass and Leatherhead Road. There's no path across the field or through the housing estate as shown on the Slow Ways map - use Barwell Lane instead (picture 14). Good section through Horton Country Park. Shops at Esher, Horton and West Ewell. Toilets and café (Tues-Fri) in Bourne Hall, Ewell. Permissive toilets in Esquires Coffee and G!RO, Esher High Street.
