Description
EltSid 2 follows the Shuttle Riverway along, you guessed it, the River Shuttle. A waymarked route that's very green and little known beyond Bexley borough. It is almost all offroad and traffic free, and pretty quiet beyond the Riverway. An improvement on dull, functional EltSid 1.
Before joining the Riverway this route uses Glenlea Path (pocket path) then along the edge Eltham Park South and through the wild northern parts of Avery Hill Park. The Shuttle Riverway starts at the Shuttle's source, although you won't see it for a while. It only turns away from it just north of Sidcup. Over 2/3 is off road, this is rarely through sterile alley ways but through parks large and small, ancient and younger woodland and green riverside footpaths.
Unfortunately it's not wheelchair friendly, having been made "safe" from motorbikes by installing those kissing gate / cage / width restrictions combo things.
Cutting across the huge meadow space at Avery Hill Park shortens things and there's normally mown paths to guide you, or aim for the distant traffic lights or blue cafe building depending on your direction. That cafe is the only mid-route stopping point, but there are plenty of benches and several bus stops.
You could continue along the the Shuttle Riverway on SidBex 2, as a really nice way to get from Eltham to Bexleyheath. BexElt 1 has some nice green sections but is rather boring by comparison

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

16 Mar 2023 (edited 29 Jun 2023)It's a lovely and mostly traffic-free walk, but in very early spring was not at it's most photogenic. This route deserves to be flattered but these photos don't do it. The SidBex 2 photos, further down the River Shuttle, are more typical.
This route hops between little pocket parks, wide grassy spaces, playgrounds and woodland but is primarily along some very green pathways and small neighbourhood parks beside the River Shuttle. I spotted fish and frogs and mallards but it wasn't quiet enough to warrant looking for water voles. The signage for the Shuttle Riverway is pretty good, but don't get caught by the Green Chain signage later, it'll send you off track. There's a grand building in Avery Hill Park which is a Winter Garden, like a smaller Kew Glasshouse, and although it was hidden under scaffolding it is open to visit now, and free.
Until Avery Hill Park it was flat but then some short slopes and there's just one unpaved section there, which had some patches of mud. Going along the south and western sides of the park then via Butterfly Lane would avoid it.
Walking beside Eltham Park South then along Glenlea Road (high above the A2 cutting) overlaps with many of the other Eltham Slow Ways, it's a simple, low traffic way to to the station.
I didn't quite stick to the line that day but took shortcuts through Parish Wood (more park than wood) and went off piste across the big meadow at Avery Hill Park using the blue cafe as a landmark.
