Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

15 Jan 2024I walked this route from Eckington. I chose to leave on the route of Eckclo2, which joins the golf course and the Trans-Pennine trail more directly. I walked the T-PT rather than the Cuckoo Way, reckoning that it would be a better surface after the wet weather we have recently experienced. Getting from the T-PT onto the canal bank is not obvious, because the paths have been changed and there is an area of dereliction to cross. However, with the aid of the trusty 1:25000 map I managed on the second attempt. The new works on the Chesterfield canal are impressive, and when completed will provide good boating facilities. I used the direct path from the canal, which climbs eastwards towards the church to join Church Street into the town centre. I enjoyed this route. Surfaces were good and progress swift.

13 Mar 2023A pleasant and largely straightforward route that makes use of canal paths and disused railway lines before heading across fields and a golf course before arriving in Eckington.
Some care needs to be given to route finding upon leaving Staveley. The canal comes to an end at Staveley basin and there are various sign posts for the Trans Pennine Trail and the Cuckoo Way - they all should arrive at the same point the other side of a major road bridge and it is then the Trans Pennine Trail that you will want to follow towards Renishaw and Rother Valley Country Park (incidentally the Cuckoo Way will also take you on the same route albeit slightly more circuitously).
Just beyond Renishaw the route diverts away from the Trans Pennine Trail (it is worth carrying on 100 yards past the turning point to see the abandoned Renishaw station platform which make a good resting point) and crosses fields, the current train line via a bridge and then across the River Rother before an indistinct and poorly marked path crosses Eckington golf course before you follow roads to the meeting point in Eckington.
