Description

A green blue urban walk. For much of it's way along the high level flood bank of the River Rother. Uses sections of the Cuckoo Way which follows the Chesterfield canal, disused on this walk. An unrecorded section of path used by the Sheffield Country Walk and a crossing of the Trans Pennine cycle trail makes this a Slow Way with good links to other promoted routes. The roadside drag to the isolated bus stop, passing Eckington Bus Station on the way confirms that the meeting place needs moving

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

I walked this route from Eckington. The hub is on the hilltop so we begin by making our way downhill on the pavement of High Street. I agree with Ken that the hub should be adjacent to the town centre, where the bus layby is. Following down Church Street we reach a pedestrian crossing over the A6135 Sheffield Road. We go straight ahead on the Rotherham road and soon turn off right on Pipworth Lane. This shortly becomes a footpath through a plantation and passes under the railway to join the flood bank of the River Rother. As we reach the factory unit the path veers right and rises to join the Trans Pennine Trail. We head across this with a left/right zigzag taking us over the old station and up a cobbled hill to reach the towpath of the old canal on the left. This is followed as it twists and turn between the houses and finally disappears into an estate of bungalows. We pass straight ahead between the houses to reach the Main Street. The hub is to our left.

This is a short functional route between the two hubs. The riverside section is pleasant enough but the rest is in urban landscapes.

A green blue urban walk. Starts along a well used paved path onto an estate of bungalows then into a green space. The onward path is less distinct but it now follows the line of the Chesterfield canal. Crossing a road the dry canal bed is now apparent as is the narrow towpath which passes under a skeletal former rail bridge then a fenced section where the canal has vanished.

A zigzag to locate a bridge over the Trans Pennine Trail, site of the railway station where the platforms await a ghost train to arrive. From here a track leads onto the raised level flood bank of the River Rother. No stiles but potential for grazing animals. Surface mud after heavy rain but no bog. This is the Sheffield Country Walk and the river forms the boundary between Rotherham and Derbyshire. Crossing the river by an unrecorded but well maintained footbridge it's roadside walking from here and a drag to the isolated bus stop, passing Eckington Bus Station and shops on the way which confirms that the meeting place needs moving.
