Mary Oz

16 Jul 2023 Summer

Leaving Earby I was very soon on a footpath which was muddy in places and had cycle barriers. The OS map is a bit misleading at OS Grid Ref: SD 90633 47208 (don’t follow the minor road) but I’ve included the correct route with my pictures. It was reasonably obvious which way to go on the ground, in both directions.
The field crossings from here were well used and easy to follow. There was traffic noise from the A56 until I left Thornton-in-Craven, a pretty village with stocks and village hall, but a lot of cars. There is a pelican crossing.
From here the rest of the route followed the Pennine Way, so was mostly well waymarked and well used. The views were rolling rather than distant, although I could see Pendle Hill. Horses and cows are both possible, although the cows I walked past were peaceful. I guess they are used to people walking the Pennine Way.
East Marton (halfway) has a pub that’s currently closed and café that’s only open 10-4 Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I passed an honesty box tuck shop at Langber Farm, between Thornton-in-Craven and the canal, with a sign advertising and AirBnB, but I couldn’t find it online once I was at home.
Part of the Pennine Way route was along the canal towpath, but I was fairly soon crossing fields and walking farm lanes again. There were nice views of Gargrave church as I approached the end of the route.
This was a lovely walk, with good facilities at either end, especially lovely Gargrave. I have no hesitation giving it 5*, although I suspect it may be quite muddy in the winter.

Once you're in Thornton in Craven, you pick up the Pennine Way which is very well sign-posted and easy to follow.
Lots of stiles have been changed to gates, but there are still some stiles along the route. There was a particularly boggy cow field (may not be boggy in the summer). Some cows initially approached me as I entered the field, but quickly lost interest.

Direct and easy to follow route.
Follows the canal and part of the Pennine Way.
