Description

I have made the following changes to Durwot One (2021-04-07):
Head west down the High Street then turn south past the library and bus station, the excellent Old Spot Inn, and up the very low-traffic single-track lane of The Broadway. This is a steep ascent, so an asphalt surface is important for accessibility. The route then turns east into Hermitage Wood, following the contour of the top of the Cotswold escarpment parallel to another lane (this is busier, as it forms the road access to the golf course). Continue east to the Ashen Plains campsite and follow the bridleway south down a very rocky, steep tree-rutted descent - note this is inaccessible to almost any wheelchair or mobility scooter due to the loose uneven surface, see Durwot 2 (2022-02-26) for a more wheelchair-friendly alternative - down Breakheart Hill past the vineyard and the New Inn, supposedly "one of the hardest pubs in Britain to find" (at least by car). The quiet, low-traffic single-track lanes of Waterley Bottom lead you south, into a gently increasing climb back up the valley and through the woods. Cross over Old London Road to join Adey's Lane which is again a very low-traffic single-track paved route back down the steep hill to Wotton-under-Edge, and more accessible than the steps and stiles associated with the Cotswold Way. At the bottom of the lane you pass the town's famous almshouses and St. Mary's Church before finding the bus stop opposite the war memorial. A visit to one of the many coffee shops or pubs just around the corner on Long Street is in order!

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.
