Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

08 Jun 2024I walked this gorgeous route from Durham on a sunny day in June. It is as good as the other reviews promised!
Note that at present you cannot descend from the bridge to the riverside in Durham because of a monstrous construction project - I had to use Sidegate.
Then it is a lovely rural cycle path through villages and the beautiful Finchale Abbey. The roads either side of the abbey do not have pavements so although they are fairly quiet, there were a few fast cars to watch out for.
But then after Lumley it's more lovely fields until the bridge into Chester le Street.
Highly recommended!.

08 Sep 2022Amazing views all the way, especially when walking towards Durham as you get occasional peeks of the cathedral as you get closer. The most traffic-free route you can find which is reliably walkable all year round. The landmarks of the route make the time fly by, from historic Durham to Frankland Prison, Finchale Priory and Lumley Castle with views into the cricket stadium and the beautiful river Wear.
Either side of Finchale Priory the route is briefly (very) steep, apart from that the ground is good and the limited roadwalking is on quiet roads.

28 May 2022This was a very pleasant walk. There are waymarkers along the route as it coincides in large part with other routes. Starting in Chester le Street its a short walk out of town through the riverside park then over the bridge and along the river. Then up alongside field boundaries to the village of Great Lumley then across more fields wheen you joing a quiet road for a while until you turn off for Finachale Priory. This is very steep set of steps leading through woodland and over the foot bridge. Finchale is an attractive ruin and there is a cafe there. From Finchale it is almost all road walking until you get to Durham.

28 Apr 2022Best walking route connecting Durham and Chester-Le-Street. The highlight along the way is the English Heritage site Finchale Priory. Also walking along the walls of Frankland Prison is quite interesting.
