23 Mar 2024The route through Ashton was straightforward and passed the outdoor market area, and some appealing and/or interesting buildings.
The lovely Portland Basin, with its historic narrow boats, was accessed via steps and a footbridge, and then the route used a cobbled footbridge over the start of the Peak Forest Canal at its junction with the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and the Ashton Canal. The Peak Forest Canal immediately crossed an aqueduct over the River Tame. However, I was following the Ashton Canal.
The towpath ran alongside the railway as far as Guide Bridge. There was a lot of former and current industry on the other side of the water. I passed a boatyard before crossing under the railway and the motorway, and after this it became more suburban. It wasn’t long before I arrived into the centre of Droylsden, after a very enjoyable walk.

12 Mar 2024Good canal walking route connecting Droylsden and Ashton-under-Lyne.
This is an easy walk with plenty of historical interest along the canal. Flat and largely step-free with the notable exception of the footbridge at the Portland Basin in Ashton. To avoid this, the tow path can be accessed from Cavendish Road (opposite the ASDA petrol station).
There is an excellent pub close to the Droylsden tram stop - 'The Silly Country' which is highly recommended.
