Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

01 Jun 2022This route is mostly on lanes, but is a functional (and enjoyable) route other than an access issue at the Pontymister Industrial Estate as mentioned by others.
I've posted a fix to this issues in Draris Two https://beta.slowways.org/Route/Draris/9824/
(Doesn't Draris sound like a dragon from Game of Thrones?)
I'm sure someone can post another route option that is longer but uses fewer lanes.

29 Apr 2022A pleasant walk. Which I completed walking from Draethen. I agree with Emmaapearo in the previous review about the gpx route, which just needs changing a little to do as described. Otherwise the route is fine.

28 Feb 2022Walked in both directions - first from Risca to Draethen, and then back again. The GPX file is not completely accurate. The route at Risca end tries to take you into an industrial estate to reach a footbridge over the dual carriageway, but you actually have to bear left along the pavement rather than go into the industrial estate. This is a lot more obvious coming from Draethen, as you naturally follow the footpath from the bridge.
There were two sections where I didn't feel completely safe, as the route felt as if it was going onto private land. I don't think that it did, but as a solo walker hearing dogs barking loudly while down a lane with ramshackle buildings and a dilapidated car, it did make me quite uncomfortable.
A lot of this route is on country lanes, rather than footpaths. They are not very busy but it's important to stay to the side as the few cars that passed me were going quite fast. Crossing Caerphilly Road is also hazardous, as the cars go very fast (national speed limit) and there is a blind corner in one direction (particularly bad from Risca).
There are several stiles and steep hills, so this is not suited for wheelchairs or those less able.

23 Oct 2021This is an easy route, mostly along quiet roads. The footpath section up/down the hill above Pontymister is fine.
