Description

This route is similar to Dranew1, but avoids the closed section of footpath along the Ebbw River between Rogerstone Welfare Ground and Jubilee Park (using Tregwilym Rd, Jubilee Way & Park Way).
It also takes a more direct route through Rhiwderin.
NB: Between the canal and Rogerstone, leave/join the canal via Groes Rd

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

It can be difficult to follow the public footpath through the field alongside the Rhymney River section when the crops are at full height (May/June). I'd recommend following the river bank around the edge of the field, with maybe a short detour to view the restored Iron Bridge.

August 2022. Direction: Draethen - Newport.

A pleasant walk mainly through farmland and forestry, taking in 3 waterways along the way.

The first section follows the River Rhymney (Photo 1) for a while, before deviating through the fields and the forestry section. I particularly liked the walk through Rhiwderin village and chose to walk up Tredegar street Photo 2), which is a car-free residential street - a nice sight to behold. The path then goes over into the next valley and cross the River Ebbw (Photo 3), although not looking its best at the moment. After a walk through the housing estate on the old "Alcan" site, the path heads up the hill to the Mon & Brec Canal - always a worthwhile place to walk. The final leg takes you up the fields to the top of the Ridgeway, before descending down through the leafy suburbs towards the city centre.

This is a good route through fields and woods (Draethen to Rhiwderin) - paths are mostly well-marked. If walking from Newport, at Ty’n-y-ffynnon Farm (as you cross the A468) there’s no footpath sign until you reach the gate by the house.
NB: Between the canal and Rogerstone, join/leave the canal via Groes Rd.
