Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

19 May 2021This is an interesting short walk, between settlements once connected by Railway, but whereas the Great Northern’s trains mainly travelled in tunnels, the footpaths show evidence of much earlier use.
There are various roads, and a Park, giving access from the start in Denholme downhill to Station Road. The Station House remains, but the Station site itself, shown as a Sawmill on the OS Map is (May 2021) a construction site with Housing intended. The Route takes a narrow footpath alongside the site fence which soon climbs the battered remnants of an old setted path to fields where it turns left to follow the Millennium Way to a bridge over a stream feeding Doe Park Reservoir. A very wet section of path is avoided by duck boards after which the climb towards Thornton starts in woodland before an awkward stile gives access to a steady climb through fields to Ten Yards Lane. The Route follows this quiet road to Moscow, where a paved and walled path with many stone stiles which provide both a ‘squeeze’ and an obstacle lead to a football pitch and after that a recreation ground. From here the remainder of the Route is an easy downhill on roads with pavements to the park in the centre of Thornton.
The footpaths, paved and unpaved, which make up most of this Route are unsuitable for Wheelchairs or prams, and in wet conditions the climb from Station Road is slippery. But this is, undoubtedly, suitable to be a Slow Way.
Photo 1 is an example of the 'Thornton Stile.'
Photo 2 shows the path (on duckboards) passing Doe Park Reservoir.
