24 Jun 2025I completed this walk recently travelling westwards from Northampton. Overall it's a very good walk, with the only things letting down being the precarious crossing of the fast A5 near Lower Weedon and the non-maintained footpath as you traverse Borough Hill at the Daventry end. Definitely worth four stars though. We stopped off at the The White Hart pub in Flore for refreshments.
The route happily leaves the urban sprawl of Northampton behind fairly quickly, taking you past the National Lift Tower (photo 1) and Sixfields Stadium. The route makes use of Storton's Pits Nature Reserve and along the Nene Way through the full length of Upton Meadows. After passing through the pretty village of Harpole (photo 4), the road turns into the unsealed Glassthorpe Lane (photo 5) as it climbs gently towards Glassthorpe Hill. The top of the hill affords good views both forward (photo 7) and back toward Northampton.
Descending the hill, the route takes you through tunnels under the M6 and A45 (photo 8) and then into the village of Flore. We arrived at the pub around 1pm on a Sunday, and we would have eaten except the Indian food that the pub now serves didn't start until 4pm. Still enjoyed a very good pint before heading back through the village and onwards to Lower Weedon. As mentioned already, crossing the A5 requires care as the road is busy and fast. On the other side the route joins then towpath of the Grand Union Canal for a mile or so.
When leaving the canal, the route takes you along a bit of road walking into Dodford, however we didn't see any cars along this quiet lane. The route then climbs steadily towards the transmitter at the top of Borough Hill. It was traversing the south of Borough Hill where the route was somewhat overgrown with nettles and brambles, not the least pleasant for my companion who wore shorts! It was a relief to get off the hill and then through the suburbs of Daventry to the end of the walk.
I can recommend the walk and would do it again, maybe choosing a day in winter when the vegetation hasn't been growing or when I was more prepared for the nettles. The walk has a mix of steps, gates, stiles and footbridges.
