05 Jun 2023I walked part of this route, from Ruthven to Phones, and it was delightful. The route went under the A9, then crossed it where sightlines were reasonable. It is correctly mapped. It could be difficult for off road wheelers due to narrowness of the path in places, large stones and muddy bits.
It uses General Wades military road, crossing moorland and passing through woodland where the harder track became grassy. It could potentially be muddy. There were many birds, dragonflies and damselflies, and an ancient bridge.
At Phones I headed away from Dalkin one, up the hill on tracks over to Loch Cuaich then along the aqueduct to Dalwhinnie, so I cannot say what the southern half of this route is like, however it continues along General Wade's military road, then follows minor roads.

11 Jun 2022This is a longer route through a remote area with no facilities along the way, and is split into 2 distinct sections. Dalwhinnie to Crubenbeg, which follows the road, which is narrow with no footpath. Crubenbeg to Kingussie, which follows the old Wade Road across the moor, where the path can be indistinct in places. There are also 2 crossings of the A9 trunk road. It is possible to cycle this on a hybrid/mountain bike (as I did), which might be preferable to walking the road section.
If you are comfortable with this type of route though, it offers some splendid isolation and views over the moors in Badenoch. In places you cannot see any roads or buildings, only fences, tracks and managed moorland.
Off the road, there are a couple of slightly boggy areas, and a short section of narrow path through a woodland, but it is mostly rough tracks across upland moor as you can see in the photos.
