Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Review of Slow Way route Dalkil two (Dalry to Kilbirnie)
I walked this route (in reverse) on a very rainy day in July 2023. It proved to be a rather frustrating experience for more reasons than the weather. However, I persevered and eventually completed the route. Here is my review. The route begins simply enough with a mostly downhill walk along some of the streets and through a park in the south of Kilbirnie, eventually passing through a large housing estate to emerge on a road called Loadingbank. The mapped route heads straight forward onto a farm track between two fields. However I found the way barred by a metal gate topped by barbed wire. There was no notice forbidding entrance so I decided to carefully climb the gate and continue along the track. As it turned out, the track was extremely overgrown and very difficult to negotiate. However I continued (over two more gates) until a point where the route was blocked by a fourth gate and the track appeared to disappear completely (at grid ref NS30895232). Here I was forced to divert to the nearby B780 (over yet another gate covered in barbed wire). I proceeded along the road, walking on the grass verge where that was possible, but several times having to walk on the (quite busy) road itself. I kept an eye out for possible ways back to the mapped route and eventually found one by turning left into Picton Estate. My route rejoined the mapped route at grid ref NS29585069, but reviewing a detailed map of the area later, I suspect I could have left the B780 a little earlier at grid ref NS29595128 and joined the mapped route at NS29785110. Anyway, from this point on the route was perfectly clear and easy to follow, and I soon arrived in the centre of Dalry and the end of the route. I am unable to recommend the route as mapped because of the access issues I encountered, and particularly the missing (?) section of path. It was certainly particularly unsuitable for wheelers. I suspect the alternative route which follows the B780 most of the way (Dalkil one) may be the only option available (unless someone with local knowledge can suggest a work-around).
