28 Jan 2022After crossing the canal, heading out of Silsden, the canal towpath can be accessed via Sykes Lane. It’s a lovely walk along the towpath, with great views across Airedale, and several swing bridges. However, it can be very muddy along here in winter, and rainy weather.
At Kildwick, the easier route is to leave the canal at the swing bridge with lights and barriers, but the prettier route followed here, is to continue on the towpath past the church and under the stone bridge, and leave through a rather tight kissing gate and down a walled path along the side of the churchyard. Once on the road, you soon pass the White Lion pub and then cross the River Aire. A footpath then leads below the main roads to allow you to cross the busy roundabout safely.
It is possible to stick to the main roads into Cross Hills, but this route uses a footpath which is accessed just before the petrol station, over a stone stile, which is a bit hidden from view. This comes out by a cattle grid which is easily bypassed, then a short residential road brings you onto the main road of Cross Hills.
