Description

Expect gorse, a gas processing plant, grazing animals (possibly water buffalo!), kissing gates, stiles, and small lochs. It includes the Old North Road (local heritage trail) and a footpath along the banks of Stenhouse Reservoir. You'll probably get views out to the Firth of Forth but two possible side trips to get a wider panoramic view would be up Dunearn Hill which is an ancient hill-fort (photo-map 1) please keep to the route shown as walkers have caused trouble elsewhere, or up Burntisland Binn (photo-map 2).

It is about 50:50 on/off road. Most road sections look small and quiet, or are in-town with good pavements. On a map the 2 km along the A909 between Cowdenbeath and the gas works/B925 junction looks less promising. But it is a goverment recommended "Core Path" and seems to have good sightlines and decent verges. It was also included in a locally written and rated walk on the Ordnance Survey website and is used by runners on Strava.

Bring food and drink as there isn't anywhere to stop and eat, or stay. But there are bus routes on the B925 and B9157.

At the A909 / B925 junction this route goes through fields roughly paralell to the road until it meets the "Old North Road" (photo-map 3) which was suggested but not shown on a walk submitted to OSmaps.com, walking on the B925 might well be fine.

Thanks to the fifewalking.com website and contributors to hill-bagging.co.uk, Srava heat maps and the OSmaps.com website for inspiration and information.

This route was created because someone identified problems with CowBur One and after I uploaded a slightly problematic CowBur Two I found some online recommendations/comments which showed a way to avoid the dodgy bit of the A909 by Stenhouse Reservoir. See CowBur Two review for more details

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.
