Description
Please walk along CowBur Three instead of this route.
This route replaced CowBur One, which not physically passable. This route has a problematic bit of no-pavement roadwalking on the A909 near Stenhouse Reservoir that seemed the least worst option at the time but which I later found an alternative for.
CowBur One went through Auchtertool where it followed an old train track that's not actually usable/accessible and has been built over with housing in places. It also went through working sections of a large and expanding quarry, poor shelf-life! And NW of Auchtertool it went through some land probably too wet for good walking. This was again on the line of the dismantled railway on OS maps but it's now shown as bog or lake on other maps.
This route uses a short bit of the A909 near Stenhouse Reservoir. The route is a desktop design but I did search for local walk recommendations in the area as well as maps, etc and that seemed the least worst option given what was said about access around the fishing lake and around Dunearn Hill. The only positive advice I found was to use that stretch but "be extremely careful". Later I found descriptions of different walks that showed a different way around the other side of Dunearn Hill. I'm just leaving this up for reference so people can avoid the same mistakes.

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

18 Oct 2022I created this route (from my sofa!) as a hopefully walkable alternative to Cowbur One which directed people through a bog and over fences near Auchtertool and later through an active quarry site. However there is a dodgy road-walking section on the A909 near Stenhouse Reservoir. Since creating this route I've found some local knowledge about an off-road alternative avoiding that section so I'm now flagging this and recommending Cowbur Three instead.
