Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Nice route, mostly flat, passes through local destinations (church, wildlife park, spa hotel) and stays close to local bus routes. Mostly well signpost. Lovely landscape. Access - mixed path type, some bridleways with no clear path through grass fields, quite a few stiles. Short unavoidable stretch on road with grass verge.

This is an easy to walk route, with no difficult gradients and well defined paths.

The route includes many gates, one set of steps and a very narrow bridge.

There are no publicly facilities along the route.

I walk from Cockermouth to Bassenthwaite.

Cockermouth has all the facilities you would expect from a rural market town.
You leave town on roadside pavements until you pass Cockermouth school.
Just past the school the path heads out over open fields. To move between fields requires a gate to be opened. There was no discernible path across some of the fields but the route was clear, just head for the next gate. The grass was short in the fields.

After climbing Watch hill the route descends through Isel wood, here the route is on wide forest tracks.

The route then joins Isel road a minor road with little traffic but not much of a verge to walk on. Follow the road turning left to cross the river Derwent at Isel bridge.
Over the bridge turn right towards Iselgate. Follow the road until it turns sharp left, but follow the track that is signposted Coalbeck farm.

The route now follows farm track and good footpaths. As you arrive at Coalbeck farm you will see Lakes district Wildlife park on the left, Zebra's and Lama's could be clearly seen from the path. The path is now on a minor road which can be quite busy as it is the entrance to the Wildlife park.

At the end of the road turn left and join the B5291. For the next quarter of a mile the walk is all on the roadside, there is a grass verge but no real path.

At the road end turn right onto the A591. This is only for a short distance but it is most uncomfortable part of the walk. Walk about 100 meters along the A591 and then turn left the signpost says Bassenthwaite village.

This is another minor road with no grass verges. Follow this until North Row where a well signposted footpath goes off to the right down the drive of a private house.
This is now the final part of the route, if the road is followed it also takes you to Bassenthwaite village. In this final part of the walk a set of steps and a narrow bridge form part of the route. If followed it then brings you across the fields to the village. Bassenthawaite has a village pub.

This walk was done in May 2022 on a warm but overcast day with a few light showers.
