Walked Stapleford Abbots to Chigwell. Overall this is a good route, direct and with some lovely woodland and fields to enjoy along the way.

There is some road walking, rather more than I would have liked, in particular the section along the B173 Lambourne Road, and Vicarage Lane - the name suggests sleepy Miss Marple territory, but it's a fast feeder for the nearby B road. In total this section adds up to a bit over 1 km. There is almost - not quite - pavement throughout, but it's so skimpy and overgrown in places that it does require stepping into the road from time to time.
The long section along Hook Lane at Stapleford Abbots (c 1.5 km) I didn't find so troublesome - no pavement but a wide verge, fewer cars, and by and large considerate drivers. There are very good views from here across the landscape.

Apart from the two road sections mentioned the route is really verdant and pleasant, for the area I would say it's probably as good as it could be. The woodland was especially lovely.
There were a few gates and narrow paths.

Refreshments at either end but none in the middle. The Rabbits pub at Stapleford Abbots is c. 400m north of the meeting point and well worth a visit.

Walking from SA to Chigwell we started out with a fairly long stretch of country road walking which felt fine and there was usually a good verge. The highlight of this walk was the extended section through the woodland which was easy to navigate and really enjoyable. Then the least enjoyable section which was the pavement walking on Manor Road and Vicarage Lane - it was a relief to jump off that for the final stretch to Chigwell station and easy to get home on the Central Line!.

We walked from Stapleford Abbotts to Chigwell.
Lunch in the nearby Rabbits Pub is recommended a great start. A walk divided into 3 parts. (1) Narrow muddy paths and some road walking bring you to a (2) serene woodland (or four) with wide leaf strewn paths and easy walking. Then (3) more fields, roads, and a golf course close to the end. A varied and beautiful walk.
Mud and puddles, kissing gates and stiles.
