07 Oct 2023I walked this route from Dorchester to Chickerell and loved the route at the Dorchester end. From Nottington there are 2 short road walking sections which meant the end wasn't so much fun.
Leaving Dorchester via Maiden Castle is excellent. As you leave the town, the view ahead is dominated by the Iron Age Fort. Even now in the 21st Century it's still clear where power lay in this area in the Iron Age. The landscape is covered in tumuli, and I always tell myself there's a chance I have an ancestor buried there. Probably not, as I'm sure I'm more peasant than tribal royalty, but it's fun to imagine.
Once the Fort is behind you, you climb, and then suddenly the views open out and the Coast is in front of you. You can see the English Channel, Weymouth, Portland and Portland Harbour. Turn around and the view inland is also magnificent. I blimmin love walking in this area.
The paths were all in good condition, there are paths through crops, or wide farm tracks to use around the crops.
There is a stretch of narrow path with nettles approaching Nottington, but it wasn't too bad today. Walking through the village is fine, but then there is a short section of road walking, which isn't awful, but it's a bit of a let down after the beginning of the route. In Coldharbour there is another bit of road walking. The road isn't that busy, visibility is good, and there are verges, so it's ok, but not fun.
It might be worth heading west on Hewish Hill, then taking a footpath south near Tatton Farm, but that is for someone else to try!.
