Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

22 Apr 2022I walked the section from Ashbourne to Calwich Abbey but with a diversion after Mayfield, as suggested (#2) by the previous reviewer, which is probably better.
Ashbourne to Mayfield is easy to follow and very nice beside Bentley Brook and then the River Dove.
Shortly after Hanging Bridge there is a path off to the left away from the Slow Way. It follows the Dove to Church Mayfield with a stretch there on a quiet lane and then back to a footpath. It rejoins the Slow Way and continues to Toad Hole Bridge. This route seems quieter than the Slow Way which runs parallel along the busy B5032 for quite a long section.
Cockley Wood to Calwich Abbey: this section is easy to follow along a track and a quiet lane.

27 May 2021I have walked the first 10km or so to and from Cheadle several times and it is a pleasant, easy-to-follow route. There is a simpler, quicker route past Alton by following the old railway line and several other alternatives, as mentioned in the first review.

02 May 2021I have not systematically walked the route but I have walked a lot of it over the past two years.
Leaving Ashbourne towards Hanging Bridge there is a short stretch at the bottom of the hill which requires wellington boots throughout the winter. An alternative route is to follow the Henmore Brook out of the town (some new paths have been constructed), then Watery Lane and the footpath along the flood bank to Hanging Bridge (the bridge over the river that is, not the place).
West from Hanging Bridge there are two additional, and in my opinion superior, alternatives.
1. Path beside the recently closed school in Mayfield (just past road "The Park"), Slack Lane, Middle Mayfield (could rejoin the route here), Hollow Lane (can be muddy but there is a dry route on the bank above) to join the Limestone Way to Ellastone.
2. From Hanging Bridge take the riverside path, then the road past Mayfield Church, and then footpath along the river to rejoin the route.
2km SW from Mayfield the corner can be cut at Toadhole Foot Bridge but that is unofficial.
Toadhole Foot Bridge to The Grove. West of the stream the path has been diverted. Follow the track up the hill.
2km W of Ellastone approaching Hole Farm. The path goes to the north of the JCB test centre yard. The lack of signposts and waymarks and the incorrect mapping of the paths here has been reported to Staffordshire County Council.
South of Oakamoor Ousal Dale is shorter (and scenic) and avoids a lot of road (but tarmac farm drive instead). There is a direct path from the end of the farm drive at Stoneydale Rd through Sutton's Wood. It is well used but not a public footpath. Not on OS and I will shortly add it to OpenStreetMap.
Dimmingsdale is another alternative for the same section but I have not walked that.

27 May 2021Dimmingsdale is a lovely woodland, streamside walk - a pleasant alternative. There is also the old railway line, as I mentioned in my review.
