Description

This is an improved version of ChaSta 1 avoiding a nightmare section on FP 42 near Collingwood Farm.

It's almost entirely off-road outside C St M and S-le-H for 5km, the majority is along Hoford Road, which is effectively off road now with no through traffic allowed, the northern half is fully blocked although the occasional dirtbike seems like a possibilty. There's a shorter way into Stanford le Hope too through a brand new park/ex golf course, part of the new Maple Park housing development.

The new bit of road walking is 600m along Buckingham Hill Road. I'd happily walk it again, almost all has a wide lumpy verge to walk along, or climb up onto when cars come by. It's not quiet but not constant traffic, which was friendly on a Sunday afternoon.

Just outside Chadwell St Marys it's possible to avoid walking on unsafe Linford Rd/ Muckingford Rd but using a pair of slightly problematic footpaths. The landowners' attitude is "unwelcoming". Footpath 75 from Cole Ave and Linford Rd has no direction arrow and path across the field is not made visible (but it's incredibly stony - not likely to stick to your boots much even if freshly ploughed). Exit onto Linford Rd end wasn't entirely clear of vegetation. Then there's a patch of Linford Rd which appears to flood, walking around might well be possible. Soon after is Footpath 65 through the yard of Mill House Farm, where a crucial part of the yard is being used to store huge slabs of marble. You can get through, but can't follow or see along the actual line, there's no obvious way around, or even a signed way through. All reported to Thurrock Council - we shall see what happens.

A fairly short route with no stopping places or public transport (or benches) but you could turn south at the Buckingham Hill Rd / Hoford Rd junction to East Tilbury where there's also a station. Maybe not worthwhile though, only 1.2km less than to S-le-H and the road walking looks fairly grim. C St M and S-le-H both have shops, buses and at station at S-le-H

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

An enjoyable walk. Loses the star because of two short but slightly unwelcoming footpaths near Chadwell St Mary's, but perhaps they will be improved with some intervention from Thurrock Council. The route overview is effectively my review.

Seasonally: it was a winter Sunday afternoon right after extremely wet weather (so much flooding!) and following many weeks of wet weather. And yet it was only slightly muddy underfoot here. Traffic on B Hill Rd wasn't too bad either.

C St M has buses, a couple of shops, and a cafe. S le H has more going on. You shouldn't miss the lack of stopping points.
