Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

28 Apr 2021Review of SlowWays Route Camudd (Cambuslang to Uddingston).
I walked this route on a cool, sunny day in April 2021. The route is navigable all the way with no particular obstacles. There are several interesting features and some sections (particularly near Uddingston) are quite scenic. However there are quite long stretches beside main roads and one short stretch through an ugly area of waste ground.
The first section leaving Cambuslang is along the busy A724 (Cambuslang High Street). There are attractive shop fronts and an interesting memorial garden dedicated to miners who lost their lives in local pits. The next section is along the equally busy but less interesting Westburn Road. There is a wide pavement but traffic noise is quite loud. There is a path parallel to the road (on its south east side) with sections of boardwalk over marshy ground which gives some relief from the traffic noise for a while. Eventually the route leaves Westburn Road opposite the end of Newton Avenue and drops down to a quiet footpath along the bed of an abandoned railway line. There is then a section along the quiet Northbank Avenue with some lovely post-war “Swedish houses” before Westburn Road is rejoined. This merges onto Newton Brae which is also a bit noisy and bleak, before the route turns into the main Newton Farm housing estate. The route runs through some quiet residential streets before entering Newton Community Park. The first section is well maintained but the next section is quite neglected and seems to be used as a trail bike circuit. Eventually the route improves with a clear brick path downhill to an unexpected footbridge over the Rotten Calder. There is then a well made path up to a railway underpass and a tarmacked road up to the B758 (Blantyre Farm Road). On crossing this road, the route enters woodland and runs parallel to the road for a while before striking off through attractive farmland scenery to reach the footbridge over the Clyde to Uddingston. The remainder of the route is along good footpaths and quiet roads until the centre of Uddingston is reached.
In my opinion, this route is certainly ‘good enough’ to be part of the Slow Ways network. It is well drawn, easy to follow and reasonably safe and direct. However it relies quite heavily on pavements along busy roads (perfectly safe but not very pleasant). I personally would not walk it again or suggest it to others because I found a much more scenic route on the way back which follows the Clyde Walkway from the top of the brick path above the Rotten Calder footbridge all the way to Bridge Street (A763) in Cambuslang. This stretch of the Clyde Walkway varies from very good to adequate underfoot but is a little isolated in places so would not be everyone’s choice.
