Description

Although 1.5 kilometres further, this route is greener and quieter than the one suggested. It leaves Burton by the Kingfisher trail (or Seven Trent canal towpath, they run adjacent to each other). At Stretton this route joins the track of the Burton to Tutbury railway line, now a nature trail. Once in Rolleston walk through the village to Marsden lane. Marsden Lane is single track with passing places for much of its length and unsuitable for a mobility scooter or pram/pushchair. The original route shows the use of a footpath across fields. This is well maintained and signed. Alternatively continuing along Marsden lane and turning right into Hilton is only slightly further

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Nice and straightforward walk easy to follow directions. Quirky shed cafe at the end if you make a slight diversion in the village.

Walked from Burton to Hilton. This is quite a pleasant walk, though the road from Rolleston to Hilton was a lot busier than I expected, and there isn't much that isn't on hard surfaces.

Leaving Burton station, we turn left and cross the A5121 using the pelican crossing, continuing straight on past the town hall towards the church. We pass the church on the right and turn right down along Needwood Lane, then left at the T-junction onto Casey Lane. There is a pelican crossing over Shobnall Street, and we follow a path opposite the junction. Note that at the canal the actual route is a matter of choice as there are several indirect surfaced paths that can be uses, but none of them turns right from the top of the bridge as shown on the GPX file (like so many GPX files on this site, a little more precision would be helpful).

We follow the unsurfaced towpath (or possibly the parallel cycle track - once again more precision would be nice) as far as the bridge under Princess Street, where we have a choice of steps on the near side or a cycle track on the far side to take us up to the road.

We follow this road into Stretton and turn left onto the old railway, which has a good surfaced track. This leads to Bridge Street, where the GPX line optimistically continues straight on. Our choice is to go slightly left and descend steps or to go a little further right to find a ramped path leading down to the old station. We follow the surfaced track (Jinny Nature Trail) along the old railway as far as the old station of Rolleston-on-Dove.

Here we turn left and follow the pavement through the village and just beyond St Mary's Church, turning right onto Marston Lane. Once the houses are passed the pavement ends, and the road is at least partially single-track. There was rather more traffic than I expected, but the nature of the road stops it being dangerously fast. We cross the mill stream, the Dove, the old Dove and the railway (at a level crossing with lights) and continue through the hamlet of Marston, beyond which the footpath right could easily be missed, as there are no signs. This crosses fields (on obvious trodden lines) to the spectacularly pointless roundabout on Derby Lane. We follow another footpath on the far side, then follow Uttoxeter Road right into Hilton, taking the right branch (Egginton Lane) where it forks.
