03 Jul 2022The route leaves Burnley Central Station (which is a lot smaller than it sounds!) via a set of cycle tracks to arrive at the canal towpath. Next to a bin there is a choice of steps or a ramp to reach the canal. It would be easy to miss these and be stuck on the wrong side of an ornamental fence. The route is a bit ambiguous here and doesn’t go quite close enough to the canal, but following the OS public footpath will work.
The vast bulk of the route is a pleasant walk along the towpath, which feels surprisingly rural, apart from a bit of noise from the M65. I saw moorhens and orchids, amongst other wildlife. About a third of the way along the route there are some benches, but otherwise there are no facilities unless you leave the path at Barden Lane.
It is necessary to pass through a cycle barrier (next to a padlocked gate) to access the road uphill to Brierfield Station. This is about 40cm wide at the top at a height of about 1.5m.
Overall this is a very easy and pleasant route between the two towns.

03 May 2021Apart from a couple of hundred yards at each end this route is essentially a walk/ride along the towpath of the Leeds/Liverpool canal.
