Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

05 Oct 2022Overall an enjoyable route which starts out through the suburban estates of Burnham-on-Sea and then heads across the Somerset Levels via the Mendip outlier of Brent Knoll. The Slow Way takes the easiest and most efficient route over this hill but if you have the energy for the climb as well as a twelve mile walk, I recommend taking the path right over the top of the knoll between Brent Knoll village and East Brent for the big view from the top.
After East Brent, the route takes minor roads for much of the next five miles, partly because there are a lot of ageing and unsafe bridges across rhynes in the area which have resulted in temporary footpath closures, so at Edingworth, you gave to walk around a little loop of road instead of taking the quick route across fields and Crab Hole cannot currently be reached on the obvious footpath over the motorway, necessitating an extra stretch of road walk through Loxton. Hopefully upgrading will happen sooner rather than later (although I am not holding my breath) and a more on and off-road alternative route will become available.
That said, the road walking is decent enough and there are some scenic views around and on towards the Mendip Scarp as you go. Drivers can go a bit fast along the section past the village of Loxton, so take a little more care here. Sight lines are good though.
After Webbington, the route takes to pleasant tracks and fields again all the way to the village of Cross where there is a safe crossing of the A38. The final stretch of footpath from there to the edge of Axbridge has a lovely view south across the levels landscape.
Access includes gates, kissing gates, stiles, footbridges and some old railway sleeper style plank bridges across ditches. Cows and horses likely on the way. The route passes pubs in East Brent and Cross and there is a little volunteer-run community shop which is sometimes open in Brent Knoll.
