Description
This is a variation on Builla2 which has an access issue at Howey Brook. It avoids the track between Dolfawr Farm and Brynhir Farm as there is a stream with a fence but no stile or gate ( I have reported the access issue - but it didn't stop me climbing over the fence) . So this route takes a detour via Bryn-y-groes and Three Wells Farm.
This route is via Carneddau which is a great hill with fantastic views - but was very snowy and misty when I went. Its open access land so great to explore but you'll need a compass or map app to navigate safely

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

02 Sep 2025Llandridod Wells to Builth Wells
This route is very close to meeting all requirements for a slow way. The critical drawback, however, is accuracy. I had to search for the right way and wander around too many times. In one case, I was told off by a local Welshman. I will be drawing another route that will hopefully address those inaccuracies. I'll just summarise them here.
The first problem is when the route approaches the Brynhir farm 3km behind Llandridod Wells. There is a better, well-trodden marked footpath that leads down to the Three Wells farm. There is no need to go to the Brynhir farm.
The route should then turn right behind the Three Wells farm right next to a little pond.
There is actually a bridge over the Howey brook and I took a photo of it. This should be the crossing point.
The route then continues along another stream but crosses it at an incorrect spot (according to the Welshman). The recommended way is to follow a waymarked footpath on the left hand side of the stream for other 100m and cross it after a stile that I also took a photo of.
I also went astray a couple of times in the mountainous area before Builth Wells. There are visible well-trodden paths on the ground and it's best to follow them. The slow way does not always take nuances of the terrain into account. It is most notable at 10th km from Llandridod Wells where the route suggests going downhill sharply. I found the area overgrown with bracken but there is an actual footpath further away where the grassy area turns into bracken. I took a photo of the spot where it is best to turn left downhill.

26 Nov 2023I created this route after hitting an access issue on Builla2 - which Powys Council still have not got back to me on 10 months later.
Anyway today I finally checked the detour and its an accessible detour ! The OS maps is a bit out but just follow the well marked path and you should be alright. Looks like the bridges over the streams were replaced some time ago but in different places to the original meaning the path does not match the OS map exactly - between Three Wells Farm and Bryn-y-Groes.
I originally walked this in January and there was a lot of snow on top of Carneddau and very beautiful - see Builla2 photos. On a less misty day there will be good views from the top.
A good walk between two good Welsh towns with plenty off opportunities to eat / drink / shop / sit in the park at either end. Its a lovely walk off the beaten path.
This also plugs a rather annoying gap I have in my Heart of Wales trail (using SlowWays) list of tested routes. Hopefully someone else will walk this beautiful part of Mid Wales using Slow Ways routes at some point !!
Variety of photos from the walk at different times of the year.

02 Sep 2025Would be interested to see your route as I couldn't see a bridge at Howey Brook when I did Builla2 hence the diversion in Builla3. Also when I went over Carneddau it was covered in ankle deep snow so I couldn't see any visible tracks. I'll try and walk your amendment once you've posted it.
