Description
This was an exploratory walk as I already knew there was an access issue and I wanted to investigate. The Heart of the Wales trail has a bit of a detour and I wanted to go up Carneddau as it had been snowing. As there is a small access issue at Howey Brook I have reported it to Powys Council (ref : 4098-9389-0052-2502) and hope it is rectified at some point and I can upgrade this route. There is definitely a PROW according to Powys Council maps at Howey Brook (between Dolfawr Farm and Brynhir Farm). The stream itself has a fence on the higher bank but this has collapsed in places - there is no gate / stile. I went to left hand side of the bank through the small tres and climbed over the lowest part of the fence.
Apart from this small issue this is a great route. There are usually good views from Carneddau but it was very misty on top when I went up but had a nice layer of snow which made up for it. This is open access land so I just cut up to the cairns - the ground is fairly easy to walk on. It was very misty and snowy when I went up and I used a compass to get across.
There is a good view of Llandrindod Wells lake (which was frozen when I went).
I will leave this route here in case the access issue gets resolved but also as a basis for any other route going over Carneddau

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

29 Jan 2023Great walk with minor access issue. Have tweaked it to avoid the access issue and created a new route.
