Description
A slightly easier to follow version of BRIWED(one). This also is a nice mostly flat route. Good opportunities to spot wildlife. Although some is on roads they are pretty quiet and are not enclosed, making them comfortable and safe to walk along

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

30 Sep 2023I walked this route yesterday. It's a good and flat route that I found easy to follow.
I was blocked by a solid field of corn between Wedmore and Sand, so I've flagged this route as a maybe and created Briwed Three, which is identical to this route other than skipping that field by following a lane.
I saw a fox, kite and two deer
I agree with the other reviews.
In winter and after rain parts of this Somerset Levels route will be very wet.

13 Apr 2023 (edited 18 Apr 2023)A long one, so I walked it in three sections over the course of a couple of weeks, seizing The odd good day between a lot of wet ones.
I have been really enjoying exploring the Slow Ways on the Somerset Levels and this one is no exception. Overall I found it a meditative, pleasurable plod through this peaceful landscape of big skies and many drains, ditches and rhynes of all sizes. It is fairly easy to navigate and even though not much seems to change for miles at a time, there are almost always views around the route, near or far, including some of the Mendip and Polden hills and even a distant Glastonbury Tor, which makes it an absorbing, visually-rich walk.
The only reason I don't give it a full five stars is that it entails a lot of (very quiet) walking on paved roads and the first mile and a half out of Bridgwater is a convoluted (but unavoidable) hike through the housing estates. Today a house construction was blocking one footpath at (w3w countries.erupts.handle) and I had to take a minor detour. I don't know if this is permanent thing. Just use the path around the green with the playgrounds instead of going via Mendip Road. Its nicer anyway.
Once at the edge of town there is a quick hop across a field to take the little footbridge over the M5. There are ominous planning notices on the gateway and it looks as though this whole narrow strip of fields between the edge of town and the motorway are going to be built on over the next few years, so there may be disruption to this exit from town in the future.
Once over the motorway, the path skirts some arable fields and onto a track past the barns of Fishers Farm (this path looks to be reasonably well walked) where it meets the minor road to Chedzoy. Once in the village, a path through the churchyard leads out to go around the edge of a another big arable field and a field of mowing grass, before crossing into a slightly rougher sheep pasture. It then arrives at the corner of another lane which leads into Bawdrip over the bridge across the broad King’s Sedgmore drain. Nice views around from this area and it looked as if at a least a few people walk the path across the fields.
At the other side of the village the Slow Way uses a mile of cycle path along an old railway cutting to traverse the Polden ridge and on up into into Cossington, where a short section of a lane and a little alleyway across a dip lead to a minor road which takes the Slow Way downhill onto the moors. There are long views ahead towards the Mendip Hills in the distance as it descends. From here follows some miles of flat walking, mostly along classically lumpy Somerset Levels roads with lovely views of the moors around and very little traffic, interrupted by one section along a drove and through some fields just after the crossing of the massively canalised Huntspill River at Gold Corner. Turn in on the track through the pair of gates just past the scruffy farmyard beyond the pumping station. On the way across Mark Moor, I met a huge swan on the verge.
Eventually the way swings east and the walk takes to green droves and tracks for the last few miles on the levels. There were some big puddles after heavy rain in March and the first half of April but not so bad that I got wet feet. Unlike most of this walk, which leads through more intensively farmed land, this area is rushier and damper with several nature reserves close by. I watched a marsh harrier skimming low over the fields as I headed up to Sand on the only noticeable hill of the whole route. There were great views back down over the Levels from here.
The last bit from Sand to the end of the walk is a mixture of hops across grassy and arable fields, bits of road, alleyways and tracks, some rather muddy today. The B-road crossing on the way in has the most lively traffic since Bridgwater.
I believe there is a pub somewhere on the outskirts of Cossington and one in Chedzoy just off the route. Didn't pass any kind of a shop on the way but there are some in Wedmore. Public transport connections are good from Bridgwater and at the time of writing there is a fairly sparse community minibus service from Wedmore to Wells and sometimes also Highbridge and Burnham on weekdays only.

29 Sep 2023Hey! I've created a Briwed Three to deal with a field full of corn just north of Sand. This new version https://beta.slowways.org/Route/Briwed/10729 is the same as Tim's but takes Sand Road (which you can look at on street view). Might you be up for adding your review there too???

04 Aug 2022A very pleasant walk. very easy (flat) walking, but with great views. Slightly more road walking than Briwed(1) but without the access issues.
