07 Apr 2023I walked from Maiden Newton to Bridport and had been looking forward to this walk. It started off well on footpaths and quiet lanes through peaceful countryside, but after crossing Barrowland Lane heading for Barrowland Farm I found the walk unpleasant until Whetley.
The farm is very hard to walk through, with no signage and the footpath was blocked today. I used other farm tracks, but as this is a cattle farm it's all very muddy (ankle deep), and very smelly. Leaving the farm buildings the route deviates from the footpath, but follow the path (using gps) or you will get stuck.
I was delighted to finally leave the farmland and get to Powerstock Common, but the route is a bridleway and far more suited to horses than humans. I again trudged through ankle deep, boggy mud and was scratched by brambles enough to make me swear. It looks like such a great place on the map but I could not wait to get away. Because of this section I wouldn't want to do this route again, but if you like a mudfest, go for it. In a dry summer it may be better, but it didn't look like it ever dries out.
The rest of the route was fine, and this is lovely country. There were some nice views and old world villages that I liked. However, caked in mud and bleeding from brambles I didn't want to stick around too long. I probably looked like I was on the run.
If I were to do this route again, I would try to plot a route that avoided Barrowland Farm and Powerstock Common.
I'll be interested to see how others find this route. I'm recommending it, despite my gripes as some people enjoy this kind of route.

02 Jun 2023I'm the Loders Parish RoW Liaison Officer so familiar with the section through Loders. Whetlands Lane is an Unclassified County Road (UCR) one short section of which has been churned up badly but easily avoided by diverting on to the disused Maiden Newton to Bridport railway. Bar Lane is also a UCR and is a lovely route but suffers from encroaching vegetation; take a slasher and secateurs!!!

02 Jun 2023Please be aware that there is a disused railway between Maiden Newton and Bridport. Much of this provides easy routes through lovely countryside. There are long term plans to use as much of the route as can be negotiated to develop a 'Trailway' all the way from Maiden Newton to Bridport. Even proposals to include a light railway; details here; http://www.bridportrenewal.org.uk/
