Description

A scenic route from Bristol to Filton, starting along the river Frome, and then using the Concorde Way shared cycle path to have a mostly-off-road walk to Filton.
The only width restriction is a motorcycle gate on the footbridge over the railway in Filton, but this has been bypassed by the locals so should be OK for a wheelchair.
Note too that this route passes fairly close to Bristol Temple Meads and to Filton Abbey Wood railway stations

The Concord Way between Constable Road and Bennington Way is closed off while development work goes on.

As a non local, I undertook this route together with the Bradley Stoke to Filton, then Filton to Bristol. It was unlike any of the other Slow Ways taken, in that it is totally urban. The previous reviews regarding diversions still apply ( as at July 23 )
Interestingly, the cycle track from Bonnington Walk to Constable Rd is not shown as a public footpath, the adjacent Wordsworth Rd is fine. The second diversion from Station Rd, involved a reasonably steep ascent up to Ashley Down Rd, and a very steep descent down to Mina Rd, where it rejoins the official route. St Werburgs is interesting.

Concorde Way shut in March 2023 and is expected to be closed due around a year. As a result c15% of the route can’t be walked. An alternative route on Ashley Down Road was found.

The route is mostly through built up areas and easy to follow.

Since March 2023 the Concorde Way cycle path has been closed (it is expected to be closed for at least a year).

As a result about 10% of the route can’t be walked and a diversion around Ashley Down Road had to be made.

The route itself is very accessible for wheels and on footpaths so very little mud.

The current diversion north of St Werburghs goes along Boiling Wells Lane. The section SW of Muller Road is probably impossible for wheelchairs - quite a lot of cyclists find it far too steep.

At the time I walked this route from Filton to Bristol two sections of the Concorde Way were temporarily closed for works. Both of these were on the shared pedestrian-cycle route alongside the route of railway track. I found it relatively easy to use paved road options to the west side of the route, which run in the same north-south direction as the plotted route. I found the route easy to follow and safe. '.

Most of route is way narked Concorde way. However, traffic free section between Lockleaze Road and Bonington walk currently closed.

I did this route on my bike so this review is from the point of view of a cyclist only.

In the main it is a decent, direct and enjoyable ride. The only part I didn't like much was going through Broadmead, which is busy with shoppers, and buses and taxis pulling in and out etc but the traffic is slow and it does connect directly to the Frome Valley cycleway. However as it is one way only along The Horsefair it is only good for going east from Bristol to Filton. Coming into Bristol it would be necessary to use Broadweir and Newgate (south of Broadmead and along the north side of Castle Park) and to turn North down Union Street to rejoin the route at the big roundabout by the bus station.

And also to note for the time being - not sure how long for - the section of cycleway between Constable Road and Bonnington walk in Lockleaze is closed while houses are being built adjacent to it, so there is a diversion up a neighbouring road which makes it a less pleasurable (but still direct) ride here.
