Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

12 Sep 2022 (edited 12 Feb 2023)A good Slow Way which routes partly along the banks of the atmospherically muddy and reedy River Parrett, and has a section heading into Burnham that offers wide views out over Bridgwater Bay. It doesn't though, in my opinion, give the full walking pleasure that can be had walking between these two towns.
The advantages of this routing are that it is slightly more direct, that it goes via Huntspill, where there are several pubs on the main road (but no shops), and that it goes along the fantastically appropriately-named ‘Sloway Lane’! But despite the photo opportunity with the road sign and the CAMRA award-winning Crossways Inn along the way, these don't quite outweigh the minuses for me, personally.
The main missed opportunity is that it leaves the centre of town on the south side of the River Parrett, heading through the busy trading estate along East Quay, when there is a quieter, nicer and mostly off-road alternative along the other side of the river on the West Quay. But if you are using this version of the Slow Way and it happens to be a Tuesday, do visit the delightful and free Somerset Brick and Tile museum which is hidden among the modern warehousing. It is a tiny joy.
Another minus is that there is about three miles of road walking between the river south of Pawlett via Stretcholt to Huntspill. They are safe, quiet lanes which sometimes have views around, but it is not as good as walking up the scenic river wall of the Parrett Estuary. Also, from Huntspill to Highbridge it takes a route along the backs of the villages, using a series of little narrow alleyways and short hops across paddocks, with many little gates and stiles. It all works fine but is a little wearing.
This is really a perfectly good Slow Way overall but I am going to share an another route which I think is better but might demand the carrying a packed lunch.
