Description

This is an alternative to Borpot One. It avoids Rowley Lane, a very narrow lane with no pavement or verge - The A1(M) slip road, I'm not sure there is a path here - and crossing over roads on the A1/M25 roundabout.
Borpot Two does walk along the A1 for a bit and along Galley lane, a verged road but then gets into beautiful woodland, beside golf courses, under the Motorway, along Farm lanes, then through pleasant Potters Bar back streets

Jane Taylor

07 Feb 2023 Winter

Walked Borehamwood to Potters Bar. Mostly this is a good route, fairly direct and makes the most of wooded footpaths, and quieter streets in the urban sections at both ends.
Highlight for me was South Mimms services, a modern light airy service station with all facilities and a hotel.

The section of about a mile alongside the A1 is not very pleasant due to the proximity of the major road, but it is safe and direct, and having looked around, I don’t think the existing infrastructure will provide any sensible alternatives.

There was one point on Dancers Lane towards the M25 crossing where a sign said the path ahead was closed - it wasn’t. I imagine this sign will not be a permanent feature of the route but just in case I’ve included a photo so future walkers know they can ignore it!

There were a few muddy patches but for the time of year it was pretty dry underfoot.

I can’t honestly give more than 3 stars because of the A1 section, the rest of the route is 4 stars and overall I’m recommending it for the network.

15 May 2022 Spring

I walked this from Potters Bar to Borehamwood.

It starts out through some residential streets, but it soon turns into walks along fields and through woods. I forded through a stream (the bridge would have worked too), and then a bridleway was blocked off. Luckily at the other side of a stream there is an (at this side) unmarked foot path that goes through a field. I was nice and followed the fields boundary instead. The stream goes under the M25 before it continues following field boundaries. It then follows the edge of a golf course, and then there is half a mile along a road without a verge. Luckily not very busy. You then cross the A1 and follow a cycle path along it for a mile and a half. This is not pleasant. The last stretch is through Borehamwood where you also pass the studios. The A1 section is the sad part, as otherwise this would have been 4 stars.

18 Dec 2021 Autumn

I walked from Borehamwood to Potters Bar. After passing Elstree Studios there are nice open spaces and residential streets. Then the A1 which is unavoidable, it is an assault on the ears and nose whilst looking at open countryside to your left. There is a crossing bridge (slope not stairs) then into greenery. A short section on a road verge then into beautiful woods dominated by oak and yew. After going round the scrubby edge of a golf course and some fields there is a track (part of Cycle network 12) that used to be a road which leads to a tunnel under the motorway. This looks like it might flood occasionally. I was lucky enough to see a kingfisher here. Then back onto the track/road behind the South Mimms services where you can take a break, picnic benches available. More fields and tracks to the outskirts of Potters Bar using cut-throughs to the High Street. Would be a 4* without the A1. Narrow and muddy in places.
