Description

An urban route which is nonetheless pretty peaceful and avoids walking along busy roads. It's very green - going through large open spaces on Blackheath and Woolwich Common as well as Hornfair Park. It leans into being off-road and cuts across two large grassy areas where the desire-line-paths may not be visible at all times of year. This is pretty obvious in Hornfair Park, slightly less so on the northern end of Woolwich Common see photos of landmarks to head for.

Mid-route there is a small parade of shops where the route crosses Shooters Hill Road, including a cafe and chippy. Also a cafe in the Lido/Leisure Centre in Hornfair Park on the other side of the road. Hornfair Park is locked at night - between 4 and 9 pm depending on the month and is mostly unlit. There's an obvious alternative using S Hill Rd. Woolwich Common is also unlit. There are bus stops scattered throughout.

This route is similar to and replaces BlaWoo 2 which inadvertently crossed the very busy South Circular Road in a dangerous place - I'm going to ask for it to be deleted.
BlaWoo 1 was also deleted as it led you across private gardens and over fences - the OS mapping is unfortunately ambiguous between Blackheath Park and Kidbrooke Grove

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

A fine route using several large green spaces in this urban area plus it keeps to quiet roads in between. I may be biased as I drew it up and know the area very well!

Blackheath Common is lined with attractive buildings, including the grand crescent of The Paragon and, as you leave the Heath down the passageway, Morden College, thought to be designed by Christopher Wren. At the other end it goes past the back of Grade II listed St Georges Garrison Church and past the Tesco building in Woolwich centre which won the Carbuncle Cup in 2014.

The wide space of Blackheath is lovely and you can feed the ducks as you pass through, Hornfair Park has an open air heated Lido - a hidden gem. Woolwich Common is a lovely mix of scrubland and acid grassland with some wonderful flora and good views towards the top of Shooters Hill and north over East London.

It does follow the Green Chain Walk between Hornfair Park and Woolwich Common and the signs help identify the turnings but it's brief, don't get complacent. Woolwich Common, most of Hornfair Park are unlit at night. The passageways between Blackheath and Kidbrooke Pk Rd are technically lit but can feel quite isolated.
