Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

July 2022. Direction: Abergavenny to Blaenavon.

Excellent walk over a combination of lanes, towpaths, field footpaths, bridleways and rough mountain tops.

After leaving Abergavenny, there`s a nice gentle walk along the canal towpath before joining the steep lane up the hillside from canal bridge 95. The footpath then continues up the steep hill until it joins the bridleway which skirts the Blorenge and leads to Pwll Du pond. This is a local beauty spot and worth taking a few moments to stop and admire the scenery (Photos 3 and 4) and wildlife.

Another steep climb follows, as the bridleway heads up to join the mountain road. There are some great views over the Usk Valley from here (Photo 5) as the road steadily climbs up towards the crest. The path then follows a right of way shown on the OS map, but it`s not sign-posted and there is no physical path, so it`s just a matter of yomping through the heather which can be up to 2 feet high at this time of year, so it`s hard work, but thoroughly enjoyable. It`s worth mentioning that the ground is very uneven here and you can`t see where you feet are about to land, so a tumble or two is to be expected (but at least it`s a soft landing). If a yomp through the mountain heather is not your thing, you can follow the mountain road to the end and walk down into Blaenavon. It`s a busy road, but there is a grass verge at the side of the road.

A really nice route, with good views along the way. Tough going in places for those with poor mobility
Some sections quite steep (partly inevitable due to the topology of the A to B). Less enjoyable (but acceptable) tarmac alternative to the toughest section for those less mobile exists - carrying on the road past Middle & Upper Ninfa towards Cefn-y-Coed then heading back towards route on road.
Final detour from tarmac is a good one, as it avoids the very busy B4264 - but does result in rough ground.
