Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

This was a mostly pleasant route although there was a good 3-4 miles of walking along country roads, some quite fast - and frustratingly some paths had become overgrown or disappeared altogether, particularly in the second half. The walk leaves Bingham Market Place and the first stretch across fields is well-defined and easy to follow, skirting the edge of fields of what looks like barley. Halfway to Scarrington, though, the path disappeared and I had to wade through the barley to reach a footbridge and continue the route (photo 3). The route follows the road for 2 miles betwen Scarrington and Orston (photo 5). Shortly after leaving Orston, the route follows a byway (Longhedge Lane) - this was quite overgrown (photo 8). The next section of the route follows a fast and quite busy country road with no pavement through the villages of Alverton and Kilvington (photo 9). Leaving Kilvington, the route leaves the road at a bend and follows a footpath (footpath sign rather hidden and hard to spot - photo 10). Shortly after Staunton, the route leaves the road and is meant to follow a footpath which cuts a corner and joins the road further up. The path is initially well-defined (photo 11), but then disappears in an overgrown field with no obvious exit out onto the road (photo 12). I would recommend avoiding this path altogether and staying on the road. The final section of the route had to be altered significantly: the path crossing the A1 no longer exists - there is just a delapidated stile in the undergrowth (photo 14) to show where the path once was. I had to leave the field and return to the road and finish the remainder of the route into Long Bennington via country lanes.
