05 Mar 2023The section from under the M6 to Highfield/Winstanley can be very muddy through the woods.
You would need to walk back along the Poolstock Bypass to cross safely at a crossing otherwise you'd be walking across a dual carriageway.
Eckersley/Trencherfield Mill complex is still closed at the back due to an unsafe wall and building meaning the footpath requires a longer walk round to get through.

01 Feb 2023 (edited 20 Apr 2023)Well, I haven’t actually walked BilWig One but I imagine that this route is a lot nicer than walking along the A571 for 5 miles. The fields leaving Billinge were very easy to walk, along a farm track with wide open views all around. There were other walkers here and there, and the paths and tracks all seem well used. The exit onto Wynstanley Road/Ashton Road is through a gap in the hedge, which seems to be the route used by locals, rather than the Right of Way path, and is safer if you are walking north. The Right of Way brings you out at a bend with poor visibility, no pavement, and fast cars.
The raised tree-lined footpath after the motorway subway is rather nice. At Winstanley, just beyond half way, there is a small shopping centre, with refreshment options. The route continues along cycle tracks and residential roads. The road crossing at OS Grid Ref: SD 56895 03974 ///swan.yards.press is over a new dual carriageway, where the speed limit changes from 40mph to 30mph and was not very busy at the time. If it’s busy, there is a pedestrian crossing a short distance away towards the roundabout.
Parsons Meadow was pleasant and the final walk into Wigan was interesting, passing Wigan Pier, and the railway themed Wigan Central pub.
I enjoyed this walk.

20 Apr 2023This route IS an accurately plotted reflection of what I actually walked. I walked across the dual carriageway as I stated in my review - “The road crossing at OS Grid Ref: SD 56895 03974 ///swan.yards.press is over a new dual carriageway, where the speed limit changes from 40mph to 30mph and was not very busy at the time. If it’s busy, there is a pedestrian crossing a short distance away towards the roundabout.” I measure it to be 150 metres away. My 11th photo shows the crossing I made using the central island.
Yesterday (19/4/23) I revisited the path with the propped-up wall at Trencherfield Mill, in case it had been fully blocked since I walked the route on 31/1/23. It IS still walkable, there is a gap between the scaffolding and the newer building. I have replaced one of my review photos to show this.

24 Apr 2023I did spot there is a gap in the scaffolding too. It is walkable beside Trencherfield Mill.
